Shady Grove is usually played in the key of D minor without a capo. To expand your fretboard knowledge also try it in A minor. Different keys will open new shapes and possibilities. Some licks that are easy in one key may be difficult or impossible or another. It's good to have options
For each measure, you'll play 4 boom-chuck patterns. Most measures are split between two chords. For example in measure 1 you would do two boom-chucks on A minor, and 2 on G. To use the A minor shapes and play in the original key of D minor, place your capo at the 5th fret. If you are playing by yourself or prefer to sing in A minor then by all means, ditch the capo. Pay close attention to the fingerings and pick directions in the guitar tablature.
