The Importance of Good Banjo Setup
Learning
Hey all, my name is Jordan. I'd like to talk a bit about banjo setup. What is it? It's the action, or string height above the fretboard. It's the way the nut slots are filed. It's the type of bridge, how it's positioned and the string slots are filed. It's a lot. It's a complex art which is usually best left to professionals. You can learn to do some on your own, but if you want the job done right, take it to someone with experience. Local shops and repair people are great if they are your only option. However, if you are able to drive to someone who specializes in repairing or building banjos - do it!
I recently took my main RK-35 to Charlie Cushman for a setup. I am so glad I did. I had been unhappy with the way mine was sounding and playing for a long time. I had tried to change string brands, string gauges, tailpieces, bridges, etc. I had tried to make adjustments on my own and just couldn't get it to a place that really sounded or felt great for me. I was really wanting to just sell it and get a new banjo. Then, I took it to Charlie. His setup made a world of difference. The sound it now makes is inspiring! I want to practice every day because of how good it sounds and plays. I no longer sit around wishing for a new banjo. Thanks to Charlie, mine sounds more alive than ever before. It moves more air and the tone is incredible. There's a reason so many pros go to Charlie for their setup work - he's one of the best. He'll set it up according to your preferences and make it sing!
So, if you can make the drive to see Charlie - do it! If you can't, ask around town and try to find someone who specializes in banjo repair, or builds them, to make sure your instrument is all it can be.
