Banjo tablatures for Whiskey Before Breakfast
Traditional
Recomended level: Intermediate
The "Whiskey before breakfast" tune is a broadly known tune that is no stranger to being mixed up with an ancient and conventional tune (it was listed recorded as part of the tunes on an album as "an Irish tune which has been well known in America for a number of years"). It has, for the most part, been credited to the mid-twentieth century in Manitoba, Canada. Also, by fiddler and composer, Andy deJarlis (known for his fine waltzes) probably on the quality of his copyrighted arrangement. This act of copyrighting an individual's unique arrangement of traditional or conventional tunes might be a common practice among music publishers. "Whiskey before Breakfast" was part of deJarlis' book Canadian Fiddle Tunes from Ruddy Waterway Valley (1957), where he is given credit for the arrangement only. Andy DeJarlis (1914-1975), according to Paul Gifford, the reel's popularity in the United States is recent. This is probably stemming from its incorporation on a Voyager Records LP called "More Fiddle Stick Sessions." It was also performed by Texas fiddle winner Dick Barrett. Nevertheless, it is quite unclear where Barrett learned the tune. Basically, it is all thanks to the recordings of Andy Dejarlis that this tune received the recognition that it got.
