The A section of this arrangement of Temperance Reel uses a lot of open strings like a mandolin or guitar player would. Using open strings can help add sustain, connectivity, and a sense of flow to single string playing. It also provides a good opportunity to make a position shift. The B section uses closed position playing. Be sure to make use of the first finger bar. When playing in a closed position you can create sustain, connectivity and flow by holding notes down, or by releasing your left hand after playing. This creates separation of notes. You can also blend these two techniques to create truly unique phrasing of the same melodic statement.
