In the A section this rolling backup uses the 5th, 3rd and 1st strings as drones while playing an alternating thumb roll. A chord note is played on down beats on the low D string. This enables us to get really cool, almost melodic walking lines. It also enables us to navigate the large amount of chord changes in a simpler way. Total win-win. It works very well in a jam or band context. Check out the licks for even more options and ideas for the different lines you can create. There's also some more authentic Scruggs style options that are nice to mix in.
The B section uses more alternating thumb rolls and pinches that will sound great. Check out the licks for some ideas on how to use the octave shape on both D strings while using the 2nd and 5th strings as drones.
