Before I Met You is played as a waltz tune, which has a different feeling and rhythm than most tunes. It can be a challenge to play waltz tunes on the banjo. A lot of the normal roll patterns and licks don't work, or don't work in the same way. We suggest you learn rolling backup and the melody before jumping into this lead version that combines rolls and melody.
This simplified Scruggs Style lead uses mostly forward roll motion. The movement goes TIMTIM when using thumb led rolls, which means the roll starts on the thumb. Other times, the roll is index led which means the roll starts on the index finger. This might look like IMTIMT. Rolls can be played on different string sets, but if the motion is a "forward" one, that is what we call it. Pay close attention and follow the suggested pick hand fingerings listed beneath the banjo tablature.
An alternating roll is used some here, along with pinches. Pinches are a great way to work on steady rhythm and help to accentuate the waltz timing. Check out the licks to get some ideas on how to incorporate alternate roll patterns and more authentic Scruggs style, bluegrass banjo vocabulary.
